Is a gas boiler sustainable?

How does a power flush work?

How does a power flush work? Do I need it? What are the benefits of power flushing my heating system? How long does the procedure take and how pricy and durable is a power flush? We hope to give answers to all your questions on this post. If you still want to know more, give us a call on 083/3855812 or email us and we will try and satisfy all your questions.

When is a power flush required?

If your radiators are not heating up properly or evenly anymore, for example your radiators stay cold at the bottom and only heat up at the top, it is very likely you need a power flush. You don’t always have to replace your radiators, often power flushing will be enough to restore full capacity of your heating system. And a plus is, it is much cheaper than replacing the radiators that aren’t heating up properly. A power flush is also longer lasting than replacing the rads because often the problem is not just in the radiators but also the pipes and the boiler and effects the whole heating system.

Our team will be able to detect sludge in your radiators using the best equipment. A thermal imaging camera shows us what is causing the radiators to fail and if there is buildup in your heating system. We will be able to provide you with the best advise and suitable solution for your circumstances.

What causes my radiators to not heat up anymore?

Over time sludge and debris can build up in your whole heating system. Sludge is a deposit in the water of the heating system that builds up over time and gathers at the bottom of your radiators. It is a mix of dirt and rust. The sludge stops hot water flowing through your system properly. This creates cold areas on your radiator. Commonly the top areas of the radiator are unaffected by the sludge and warm up as normal.

See in this illustration how sludge builds up in the radiator.

How does it work?

If you want your heating system to work efficiently again and you radiators to heat up evenly, the sludge and debris have to be removed. This can be done by replacing the radiators but this would not remove the sludge ion the pipes. Often this is not necessary and a power flush is a much better suitable and economic solution and is able to remove all sludge from the heating system including the build up in pipes and boiler itself.

The process is very easy. If suitable, we drain down the heating system and hook up a power flushing machine to flush it out. Fresh water is pumped through the boiler, the pipes and the radiators flushing out all sludge and debris. The filter catches all sludge leaving only water in the heating system. Finally, we’ll pump a cleaning agent through to remove the sludge and ensure there are no remaining blockages. This is a very effective solution to the problem of poorly-performing radiators, increasing the efficiency and extending the life of your central heating system including your boiler.

To catch future sludge and prevent build ups in your system again, we recommend installing a magnetic filter like MagnaClean filter or GRANT MagOne filter at your boiler. An installation can be done right after the power flush.

Specifics

Power flushing your whole heating system takes usually one day. We will do the procedure in one go flushing all radiators, pipes and the boiler at once. No need to flush every radiator separately, because your heating system is connected throughout. To check out the price of a power flush visit our price section.

When should a boiler be serviced?

To ensure your family is warm and cosy in the colder months, you should get your boiler serviced once a year. An annual boiler service will make sure you will always have hot water and heat in your home. It’s best to schedule your boiler service before the autumn to avoid breakdowns in the colder months when you really depend on a boiler running smoothly.

A boiler that isn’t serviced will get less efficient every year. So servicing your boiler once a year can not only prevent you from costly breakdowns or even more expensive boiler replacements. It will also make sure your boiler is only burning the fuel it needs to heat your water. And this will save you fuel costs in the long run. Maximising the efficiency of your boiler will keep your energy bills to a minimum.

If you are not sure, when your boiler at home was last serviced, contact us for help. You should get your boiler serviced every 12 months or once a year. A Plumber will service your boiler, which will save future fuel costs. He will make sure your boiler is only using the gas or oil it really needs to heat your house and your water. Also a boiler service is much less expensive than to repair a breakdown or to replace your boiler.

Is your boiler safe?

And don’t forget the importance of safety. Servicing your boiler ensures you it is running safe, it is not leaking fuels or fumes and will reduce the risk of dangerous carbon monoxide poisoning. Always book a plumber that is registered for gas work and oil work.
